May 6, 2022

Tangier is a city in Morocco, Africa. Located in the Northwest part of the country, Tangier sits on the Maghreb coast at the western part of the Strait of Gibraltar. The Strait of Gibraltar is where the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet, making it the perfect route for traders. Tangier is the capital city of the Tangier-Asilah prefecture of Morocco and also doubles as the capital of the Tangier Tetouan-Al Hoceima region. Because of its strategic location, Tangier has previously been used as a Berber town and later a Phoenician trading center. Many cultures have influenced the city throughout history because of the constant contact with traders from all walks of life. Furthermore, it covers 116 square kilometers and is home to over 947,952 people as of 2022.

Tangier offers four types of learning options for students in terms of education; Arabic, French, Spanish, and English. These language systems provide education from the lowest grades to the 12th Grade. There are many tertiary learning institutions located in and outside Tangier. After the 12th Grade, students can pursue diplomas in different fields, including business management and hotel management. A few students have the opportunity to join international schools for their primary and high-school education.

Tangier’s culture is influenced by the many people who have made it their home over the past few centuries. It is a complex mixture of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim cultures blended in the tropical weather to make something out of a fairytale. It presently serves as a popular destination for international jet set tourists. The city is undergoing changes to make it a better tourism spot as well as a sports destination with the construction of a football stadium. The government is also looking at other projects to improve the city’s economic output. Such projects include the Tanger-Med port, which is expected to start bringing money and goods to the city once complete. To make traveling to Tangier easier, there are plans to build an airport terminal to improve tourism.

All I know about Tangier is that it was a favorite place for American– and probably European– hippies to visit.. and bring fragrant souveniersback from.
