What Is Protaras?

Protaras is a location in the Republic of Cyprus. Its economy is founded upon tourism for the most part, so much so that it is sometimes seen as a tourist resort.

What Are Some Interesting Facts about Protaras?

Here are some interesting facts about Protaras:

It’s Under the Administrative Jurisdiction of Paralimni

It is interesting to note that Protaras is under the administrative jurisdiction of the town of Paralimni in the Famagusta District. Technically, the port of Famagusta is the most important settlement in said district. However, it is controlled by Northern Cyprus rather than the Republic of Cyprus. As a result, Paralimni is home to a sort of district administration in exile, which came into existence after the events of 1974.

It Used to Be the Site of Leukolla

Protaras was the site of the city-state of Leukolla in ancient times. It wasn’t particularly prominent. For the most part, Leukolla tends to be remembered because it was where Demetrius I Poliorcetes sought refuge in 306 BC before going on to beat Ptolemy I Soter in the Battle of Salamis in the same year. It was a crushing victory, thus enabling Demetrius’ father, Antigonus I Monophthalmus, to declare himself a king. Something that was soon followed by the rest of the Diadochi, a term referring to the friends, the family members, and the commanders of Alexander the Great who fought for control of his empire after his early death at the age of 32.

It Caters More to Certain Clienteles

There are a number of tourist resorts in the region. In Protaras’ case, it stands out by catering to a couple of clienteles. One would be Cypriot tourism. The other would be those looking for a family experience.
