Limerick

Limerick can refer to both a city and a county that can be found in the Irish province of Munster. The two share a name for the simple reason that the city was the namesake of the county centered upon it. Regardless, Limerick’s historic core is situated on Kings Island bounded by the rivers Abbey and Shannon, though it has long since expanded beyond those boundaries.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Limerick has a long history. The city itself dates to the 9th century. However, there are some very good reasons to believe that people lived on the site before that. For example, the Greco-Roman scholar Ptolemy produced the first known map of Ireland in 150 AD, which shows a place called Regia at the same place as Kings Island. Similarly, the place is known to have had a bishop in the mid 7th century, suggesting that it was a place of some prominence.

Some people might be wondering if there is a connection between Limerick and limericks. If so, they should know that the answer is unclear. Generally speaking, it is assumed that limericks are indeed named for the city, perhaps because the form started seeing use in said region. Unfortunately, there isn’t enough evidence to say for sure on the matter.

In modern times, Limerick has seen both ups and downs. For instance, it took some hard hits in the mid 20th century because of the departure of a number of traditional industries. Despite this, Limerick has persevered, and it remains one of the most populous and thus one of the most important cities on the island of Ireland.
