Laax is a municipality that can be found in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Primarily, it is known for being a resort in one of the country’s best winter sports regions. Thanks to that, Laax has shown up more than once in pop culture.
Here are some interesting facts about Laax:
- The municipality is situated in the Surselva Region. Its name means “above the forest,” which refers to the valley of the Anterior Rhine. This is contrasted with Sutselva meaning the region that is situated “below the forest, ” which lent its name to the Sutsilvan dialect.
- Both Surselva and Sutselva are named in the local version of Romansh. For those who are unfamiliar, Romansh is one of the Romance languages descended from the spoken Latin of the Roman Empire, which is recognized as one of the official languages of Switzerland. It isn’t a very common language. In fact, Romansh is primarily spoken in the canton of Graubünden.
- The village of Laax is home to a small lake called Laaxersee. Still, it is big enough to offer fishing opportunities from May to mid-September. In the wintertime, Laaxersee tends to be frozen over.
- It is interesting to note that the surrounding area has three resorts. Each of the three resorts caters to a particular group of clients. Laax is extra-popular to snowboarders. In contrast, Flims appeals to hikers, walkers, and cross-country skiers, while Falera is popular for families who want something more relaxing.
