Salzburg is one of the nine states that make up Austria. Officially, it is called Land Salzburg, which is useful because that name distinguishes it from its capital that shares the same name.

There are a number of things that stand out about Salzburg. For example, the name means “salt fortress,” so it should come as no surprise to learn that it once produced a huge amount of the substance that was so prized for food preservation in pre-modern times.

Similarly, Salzburg can offer interested individuals some excellent opportunities for skiing because of the Kitzbühel Alps, as shown by the municipality of Saalbach-Hinterglemm.

People have been living in the region since at least 1222. There seems to have been enough of them to matter, as shown by the awarding of market rights in 1410. Something that would have been quite valuable in medieval times because holding markets on a regular basis would have meant becoming a commercial center for the surrounding region. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough, and the area remained an agrarian community on the poorer side of things well into the 20th century.

Things started to change after the end of World War II. This was because more and more people started visiting Saalbach-Hinterglemm, thus enabling it to benefit from the tourism boom.

Nowadays, it has become one of Austria’s best ski resorts, with the result that a lot of the residents’ jobs are tied to the tourism sector in either a direct sense or an indirect sense. Something that speaks volumes about its importance in their lives.
