Conakry is the capital city of Guinea, the largest urban area, and the largest port on the Atlantic Ocean. The city resides on Tombo (Tumbo) Island and the peninsula of Camayenne (Kaloum). The French founded this town in 1884 and took its name from a Susu (Soussou) village nearby.

It is believed that the city’s name derives from combining “Cona,” which is the name of a wine and cheese producer of the Baga people, with the word “Nakiri,” which means “the other bank or side.”

The city has a brief, turbulent history as the capital of a French colony. Then, under the ruling of a socialist dictatorship. As of late, Conakry has been known for poverty and infrastructure failures.

Guinea remains an underdeveloped nation despite its large mineral, hydroelectric and agricultural resources. Bauxite reserves in the country account for roughly half of the world’s reserves, and the country is the world’s second-largest producer of bauxite. Over 70 percent of exports are attributed to the mining industry.

the city has a robust manufacturing industry that includes fruit canning, fish packing, printing, automobile assembly and aluminum utensils and plastics manufacturing,

Conakry is the economic, administrative and communications center of Guinea. In addition to the port, the city’s economy largely depends on the alumina and bananas shipped through the port.

Some of the city’s attractions include the Guinea National Museum, several markets, the Guinea Palace of the People, the Grand Mosque of Conakry and the nearby Iles de Los.

An important feature of the city is its botanical garden.
